Walter Muckelroy

This story and photo is shared by the Trust with kind permission from Chris Bown

Lance Corporal Walter Muckelroy of the Durham Light Infantry was my mum, Irene's, first husband and he was 38 years old when he was killed in action on July 16th 1944. They had only been married a few months, marrying in December 1943, such a short time together.

Thankfully my mum found happiness when she went on to marry my dad in 1946.

Growing up I was aware of Walter as I saw the wedding photos but knew nothing else about him other than his parents were called Ethel and Jack. Over the years I have always wanted to find out more as I feel so sad as he has no family that I’m aware of to honour him and the huge sacrifice he made.

My husband and I have visited his grave in Bayeux a few times and this year, in just a few weeks time, we will visit the British Normandy Memorial to see his name on one of the pillars. Although I was born many years after Walter died I am delighted I will be able to see him commemorated in this way. Both my parents died many years ago but I know they would be happy Walter’s name will be there for everyone to see.

Update

We have now been to visit Walter in the Bayeux Cemetery and we also visited the British Normandy Memorial. In fact we went twice! What a beautiful place, such a wonderful memorial to all those brave people. The Standing with Giants were amazing, moving and very emotional. Seeing Walter’s name was extremely emotional and I am so pleased we were able to visit.
