John Richard Cowley
Remembering my Great Uncle, John Richard Cowley, known as Jack.
Pte J.R. Cowley was one of three brothers who served during WW2. They had all signed up before the war but only two of them would survive. Jack served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Warwicks in India, for which he was awarded the General Service Medal, 1936-1939 and a clasp was awarded for the North West Frontier 1937-1939.
He then served in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Warwicks as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and was one of the many evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940.
On D-Day, June 6th, 1944, he landed on Queen Sector, Sword Beach as part of the second wave. It was during the battle for Caen that he was killed in action on the 20th July 1944.
He is buried in La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres and he is commemorated on the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, France.
His Sacrifice and all others will never be forgotton.
