Desmond Adams
This story is shared by the Trust with kind permission from Mavis Williams, Researcher.
Desmond Adams was born on the 16th of March 1925, the son of Stanley & Daisy Adams (née England), who had been married in the September quarter of 1933 in the Registration District of Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire. He was the eldest of three sons born to Stanley and Daisy.
In 1939 the family were living at Red Hill, Chewton Mendip, Emborough, Somerset. The 1939 Register records that Desmond's father had been working as a Milkman (Journeyman) but was now retired and Desmond had taken up his father's occupation and was working as a Milk Lad.
It is not known when he joined up but he first served with the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment before being posted to 6 Commando. He landed with his unit on D-Day but died of wounds he received whilst getting ready to attack a German pill box shortly after 3 Troop, 6 Commando had spearheaded the Commando off Sword Beach.
His loss was keenly felt by his family as shown by the inscription they requested be added to his Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone:
We who loved you, still sadly miss you. Mum, Dad and two Brothers.
