This story is shared by the Trust with kind permission from Mavis Williams, Researcher. The photo of courtesy of Lady Linda.
Robert Aird was born on the 13th of October 1920 at the Station House, Creetown, in the Stewartry of Kirkudbright, Scotland. He was the son of John & Mary Helen Aird (née McGaw) who had married on the 11th of March 1910 at Wigtown, in the County of Wigtown.
We find the couple on the 1911 census, living at 3, High Vennel, Wigtown, with Mary Helen’s family. John was working as a Railway Goods Clerk. By 1921 their family had enlarged, and they are seen living at the Station House, Kirkmabreck as John Aird had been promoted and was now working as the Station Master for Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railways. They had six children in total, Annie Nichol Skimming, 11 years and 1 month old, James Alexander, 8 years and 8 months old, Lizzie Muir, 6 years and 1 month old, Margaret, 3 years and 7 months old and finally was Robert, 8 months old.
But the family had suffered a bereavement early on as Annie, their eldest, was one of a pair of twins but her twin, Emily May, had died. They were to suffer another bereavement in 1944.
It is not known when Robert joined he Army but he served in 22nd Dragoons, Royal Army Corps. They landed on Sword Beach on D-Day but Robert was killed in action. He was first buried at La Breche and then, on the 21st of November 1944, he was reburied where he now lies at Bayeux War Cemetery .
