Ronald Walter Abrams
This story is shared by the Trust with kind permission from Mavis Williams, Researcher.
Ronald Walter Abrams was born on the 15th of January 1924, as recorded in the 1939 National Register, which was taken on the 29th of September 1939. He was the second of three children of George and Amelia Abrams (née Condon). They had married in 1921 and the 1921 census shows that just before their marriage they were both living in High Street, Wapping, George Abrams at 97, High Street and Amelia Alice Condon at 19, Tower Buildings, High Street, Wapping, almost a ‘Girl next door’ situation.
The 1939 register is the first time we see Ronald Walter on official documents, and it tells us he was an Office Boy (Postal) and single. They were living at 6 Maybank Villas, Barley Lane, Redbridge, Ilford M.B., Essex.
So, Ronald Walter Abrams would have been 15 years old when the war started on the 3rd of September 1939, too young to have been either enlisted or conscripted. However, he was to find himself in the Royal Air Force and training at RAF – Methwold, and eventually in the 149 (East India) Squadron of the Royal Air Force. He was, among many thousands of other young men, to find themselves facing such dangers on the 6th of June 1944 and one can only wonder at their bravery, he was among so many who gave their lives for us all.
